Measuring the Customer’s Dog

74942912 - border of dogs arranged in order of heightWe thought it was a good time to remind you that the beginning of a good install job starts with the dog(s). Bill regularly reminds customer service that we always need to start with the dog. Many people start with the location instead of their pets, causing them and you frustration when the location does not allow adequate space.

Customer service recently had a call from a customer that had a Bernese Mountain dog that had been using a Tall Medium size pet door for years and now wanted to get a larger size. Yes, her dog was older and having issues and not making it through the pet door very easily anymore. But it had gone through it just fine for years. We all cringed and felt for the dog.

At the same time customer service is overjoyed when a customer calls and wants to order a more than large enough pet door for their dog, so they are comfortable going through it.

In starting with the dog, you need their width. This is the widest point on the dog, usually the shoulders. Add 1-2 inches for safety and clearance. If the dog does not like the tape measure, open a door just wide enough for the dog to go through. Again add 1-2 inches to the measurement.

Next, you will need their height. Measure the dog from the floor to their withers (top of the shoulders). If they won’t stand still for the tape measure, stand next to them and mark the height on your leg. Add 1-2 inches to this measurement also. Keep in mind if the customer has more than 1 dog, you may need to make accommodations for all with a taller pet door. This allows the pet door to be installed lower for the short guys, but the tall guys still have clearance height in the pet door.

If you have to install the pet door higher off the floor, due to a tall baseboard, etc., let the customer know that for their dog they may need a step/ramp to make it easier for their dogs to use. If the customer has never had a pet door, they probably haven’t thought about it and are grateful for the advice.

Remember, you have knowledge, experience and training that gives you a unique perspective. Use it to advise customers wisely. Remember also, you are their dog’s advocate.

To Your Success!

Dealer Specials Are a Hit

We just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all our dealers who have purchased one of more of our dealer specials. These items are clearance merchandise, returned custom sizes, scratch and dent products or one of a kind items that we have listed on the dealer dashboard.

When we first started offering these items in May 2016 we had well over 100 items available and we continually add more to the list as items are returned by customers or for various other reasons. Most of the items available are in perfect or near perfect condition with very minor blemishes but because they don’t live up to the high quality standards of Hale Pet Door, we will not sell them again at full price. This makes a great opportunity for you, our dealers, to pass along some savings to your customers and maybe satisfy a customer who cannot afford a full price pet door.

We have been so pleased with the response to this program. To date, we have offered 183 items from all our product lines: wall, door, screen and in glass pet doors; window and panel models; frame only models; ramps; barriers; and even kennel doors. The response has been amazing and currently we have less than 60 items available. However, more are being added constantly. Remember though that these items are sold as is and are first come, first served. So if you are interested in something, call to order right away as it may not be available if you wait. And of course, you will still get your dealer discount on top of the discounted price listed on the website.

To access the Dealer Specials page, log in to our website at halepetdoor.com. Click on the link that says “Dashboard” and then pick either the tab or the window that says “Dealer Info”. The dealer specials are at the bottom of the page.

Meet Hale Pet Door’s New Dealer Coordinator: Scott Strong

When we realized that having our Dealer Coordinator in our Corporate Office in Southern Colorado would streamline the system, we discovered the perfect candidate for the job was working on our manufacturing line. Liam Aguilar had been doing a great job of recruiting dealers remotely from his location in Florida . Liam is still an integral part of our dealer recruitment as he works behind the scenes creating CraigsList recruitment campaigns, managing testing and preparing contracts.

Scott Strong had been working in Hale Pet Door Manufacturing since August 2016 when Bill Hale noticed his leadership capabilities and decided to give him the opportunity to work with new and existing dealers. In January he started contacting dealer prospects and proved to be a ‘natural’ when it came to explaining the Hale Pet Door Dealer Program to prospective dealers.

Just last week, Scott attended the Handyman Matters Annual Convention in Tampa, Florida where he met many of our dealers from around the country and was able to introduce Hale Pet Door to new franchisees.

Scott has extensive construction experience and has been a Certified Fenestration Installer (windows and doors), so he can help you with your Hale Pet Door installation questions and concerns. Scott can be contacted by email at ScottS@HalePetDoor.com and phone at Hale Pet Door 800-646-4773 or cell phone 719-315-1615.
